It was founded by Longchen Rabjam a great philosopher in Dzogchen, a religious movement in Nyingmapa school in the 14th century.
Longchen Rabjam (1308-1363) has to flee from Tibet on exile in Bumthang for about 10 years and in which he had constructed many monasteries and of which one is Tharpaling in 1352.
Tharpaling was renovated several times of which the most notable one is by the first king at the beginning of the 20th century.
Monastery prospered and was always active for Nyinmapa teaching and in 1985 the monastic school (Shedra) was founded above the main complex.

The temple on the ground floor has the statue of Longchen Rabjam, Guru Rinpoche, and Tibetan King Trisong Duetsen. The small temple on the upper floor which was renovated by the first king contains the beautiful painting of Paradise of Amitabha, Longchen Rabjam, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, and Guru Dewa a rarely seen. And the principal are Samantabara, Guru Rinpoche and Longchen Rabjam.
