Brief Background

It was constructed by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1638. It is said that he was busy searching for the site for construction for the fortress. And on the chosen site he came across the boy name Wangdue. So he has given the name Wangduephodrang- Wangdue, Palace.

It was repaired in 1837 after a fire and an earthquake in 1897. It's unfortunate that the historic fortress was caught by fire on June 24, 2012, and was completely burned down. And after that it was reconstructed and was completed in 2022.
